ROK Navy Logistics Command’s maintenance depot and the U.S. 8th Army held discussions on expanding the military application of 3D printing technology and exploring practical avenues for cooperation. This technical exchange was organized to share use cases of additive manufacturing and to enhance interoperability between the ROK-U.S. by aligning quality standards and technical specifications in maintenance operations.
During the visit, U.S. 8th Army personnel reviewed the current status of 3D printing process operations within the depot and discussed future directions for collaboration. In particular, both sides examined specimen testing and quality inspection procedures based on ASTM and ISO standards, confirming the potential for establishing a quality assurance framework aligned with international standards.
The technical discussions focused on practical areas of cooperation, including the production of components using high-strength materials, extending part lifespan through multi-material (bimetallic) additive manufacturing, and establishing quality management systems based on KOLAS certification. Both sides also recognized the importance of 3D printing technology in enabling rapid logistics support, particularly in addressing obsolete part supply issues and enabling on-site production.
Moving forward, the two sides plan to strengthen collaboration by sharing technical data and conducting joint testing and evaluation to ensure the reliability of 3D-printed components.
