Strengthening Cooperation for Domestic AM

On 2nd Jan. 2025 the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology’s Additive Manufacturing Manufacturing Innovation Center (KAMIC) has been supported as consulting body for the utilization of AM technology by the Ministry of National Defense, during the last decade by MOU for Cooperation in AM Technology in the Defense Sector’ signed by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of National Defense. And the extended leveraging of AM in defense was required and this turned into the renewed MOU and signed freshly.
This MOU was driven by the growing importance of AM technology in the defense sector, aiming to continue cooperation between the two ministries and enhance national defense component manufacturing capabilities. KAMIC plans to support various activities for the introduction and diffusion of AM technology in the defense sector based on its expertise and infrastructure in AM technology.
Main Cooperative Activities
- Domestic Production of AM Technology: Utilizing AM technology to produce parts for warships, tanks, etc., that are discontinued or difficult to procure, thereby contributing to improving the operation rate of combat equipment.
- Securing Advanced National Defense Component Manufacturing Capabilities: Utilizing AM technology to manufacture parts with improved performance compared to existing parts and establish a rapid procurement system.
- Strengthening AM Technology Expertise: Enhancing technological competitiveness through identifying and demonstrating demand for defense AM-related parts, and developing technology and manufacturing process databases (DB).
- Revitalizing the Industrial Ecosystem: Strengthening the competitiveness of the domestic AM industry by establishing parts supply chains and industrial ecosystems and fostering professional manpower.
KAMIC has contributed to the development of the domestic AM industry through projects such as the industrial AM parts demonstration support project. It has provided integrated support from parts demonstration to field evaluation, focusing on securing the quality of AM parts that can be used in industrial fields. Based on this experience and know-how, KAMIC is expected to contribute to expanding the application of AM technology and strengthening competitiveness in the defense sector.
KAMIC can provide customized solutions that meet the specific requirements of the defense sector through state-of-the-art AM equipment and expert personnel. In the future, KAMIC will continue to strive to lead the development of AM technology in the defense sector and contribute to strengthening national defense capabilities.
